Hayate The Combat Butler Penultimate Chapter: When You Wish Upon A Star -- Review and Synopsis

Synopsis:  Nagi is dismayed and thinks that she'll never meet Hayate again. Mikado and his monitors confirm that the Royal Garden is gone. Hayate might not have escaped. Nagi screams Hayate's name and he falls down next to her after the third call. Mikoto Tachibana comes in to explain that it was because of the strongest bond between them and Nagi calling out his name allowing him to cross over the past and the future like a gust of wind -- as told to her by someone who once made a wish.

After a brief hug between Hayate and Nagi and Athena declaring it's a happy ending, Hisui attacks from out of nowhere. Nagi says she has something to do with Hayate, so she gives Hisui the loto key. Hisui is satisfied with this and invites Nagi to eat some cake together sometime. Athena and company also disperse leaving Hayate and Nagi to talk.

Nagi declares that she no longer needs her wealth, power and anything else given to her by someone else. She's decided to be her own person without relying on someone else's strength. With that she fires Hayate and tells him that she no longer needs him for protection, support, and that it's fine if he didn't love her. She says that this one year of misunderstandings wasn't bad at all. With this, Hayate, gets up and says he is grateful to her and seemingly, he walks away from her. At this point, Nagi is trying to hold back her tears. The chapter ends here.

Review: This is a guest review by Roop Banerjee. This may be the last review on this site... so enjoy.

First of all, thank you lordcloudx. I feel honoured for getting an opportunity to write a review on this chapter.

Now onto the review.

Nagi just once again made the sacrifice that she had made in chapter 252. And she'll probably do it again. That is how intensely she loves Hayate. This chapter shows how much she has evolved as a person and the maturity she has gained. She had let go of Hayate when he told her that he needs to save someone (chapter 253), she was ready to let go of Hayate when she believed that Ruka had won (chapter 427). This time as well, she sacrifices both her inheritance and decides to release Hayate permanently.

However, the struggle is there in her heart. After Maria left, the one thing that made her go on was her undying love for Hayate and her belief that he returns the affection. And when the truth about that Christmas Eve night finally comes out, Nagi loses the one thing that meant everything to her, her hope that Hayate loves her. And therefore, the path is opened.

In the alternate world, Dream Maria is with her as well as Dream Hayate who loves Nagi and expresses his feelings overtly. Dream Maria is not much different from Real Maria. DM differs from RM only in the sense that RM wants to explore the world. Her genius has made her graduate from school too quickly and her potential hasn't been fully recognised as Nagi's maid and within the confines of the Sanzenin estate. Nagi not needing RM's help (chapter 424), Nagi gaining victory over her (chapter 515), made her question her own capabilities and what she really wants. Like Nagi, RM has lived a sheltered life but the former's escalating growth made her want to travel for her own self discovery, which she truly deserves.

In the previous chapter, DM declared to Hayate that she wants a wallet for a birthday present. A wallet as a gift, is a symbol of friendship and wishing the recipient a prosperous future. This is something that, thanks to lordcloudx, came to my notice.

In the Royal garden, Nagi finally calms down after Hayate tells her of the importance that the year had for him, how much he values their moments together and Nagi agrees to return home. She voluntarily loses her inheritance to Hisui and gives Hayate the freedom to choose his own path and to fall in love with whoever he wants. Her actions prove that no matter how much she loves and wants to be with Hayate, his happiness is everything for her at the end of the day. If his happiness means somewhere away from her, then she's ready to do that. Her fortune is nothing in comparison to the immense love that she has for him.

The way she saves Hayate from the Royal garden is spectacular as well. Her scream for the person with whom she shares the strongest bond lets him do the special jump, which he is motivated to do, only for Nagi. The king's jewel indeed is a stone of bonds and Nagi manages to save both herself and hayate with a single stone. A bond involves at least two people and in order to form a strong bond, mutual feelings are needed, it cannot be one sided. It makes me wonder, that if the feeling is love on part of Nagi, what is the feeling on part of Hayate?
Nagi losing her inheritance and letting Hayate go could be taken as another confession but she doesn’t expect anything in return because, she has given up on that hope too. This, however, doesn't make her gain closure as we can see her crying and clenching her fists. She has loved, does love and will probably continue to love Hayate in the future, such a deep impact he and their moments together had on her.

We can see Hayate becoming wide eyed, he bows down and expresses his gratitude. It is quite likely that he feels something more than simple gratitude at the moment but that is curtained by him turning his back towards Nagi. What that feeling is, we can only guess and find out hopefully in the next chapter.

Since we're so close to the end of this manga, there are a few things I need to mention about Hayate regarding his response in certain situations when Nagi is concerned:-

Limerence - this is what I think Hayate feels towards Nagi. Since the day he saw her, he has felt a spontaneous adoration and attachment towards her. Hayate does feel love towards her. In 500 plus chapters, this love has never been declared as romantic love, nor a love for a sister. At least Hayate has never declared what exactly he feels for Nagi. Since he has never shown any overt physical attraction for Nagi, I think he's in a state of limerence as far as Nagi is concerned. It is because of this limerence, that he yearns for Nagi's attention, although he never considered that someone like her could be in love with him.

Their first meeting - Time and again their first meeting has been focussed on. Hayate wanted to kidnap Nagi but immediately showed concern for her when she felt cold. When Nagi said that his coat felt warm, Hayate felt the same in his heart. He has long been deprived of a sincere praise and has always felt that no one needs him. Nagi's need for his coat, his money to buy a drink, and himself, in turn, triggered a need in Hayate to be needed by Nagi. He wants to belong and with Nagi, that need is best satisfied.

Becoming a debt ridden butler - Hayate became a “poverty stricken debt ridden butler” when Nagi paid off the money for him. He became burdened, not just financially but emotionally as well. He was insecure, drawn towards Nagi, and he has himself declared that something felt off about his relationship with Nagi. When the misunderstanding happened, Hayate was already under an emotional burden, for his wrong choice of words made Nagi misunderstand and from then onwards, he has only led her on, although unintentionally. When he paid off the debt in school trip level 5, only the financial debt was cleared. The emotional debt, however, remained.

His decision to stay as Nagi's butler -
Hayate decided to stay as Nagi's butler after he paid off his debt. But why? He felt Nagi will be unable to stay on her own. Of course it was also because Hayate really enjoys his life with her. But he always seems to be in a state of panic when Nagi's growth as a person is concerned. Her independence is a potential threat to him, to his position to remain by her side and he becomes frightened upon thinking that a day would come when Nagi would no longer need him.
So when he decided to remain as her butler, one of the main reasons is possibly because of his need for her, rather than her need for him, as he has tried to convince himself many times.

On seeing Nagi's manga about him - Hayate has never felt that he could be the centre of someone's attention, that someone could make him their first priority and with Nagi, his only confidence has been that he is a suitable butler for her. That he could also be someone she truly loves, is beyond what he can imagine. Which is why, when he saw the manga, he was bewildered, but he didn't exactly hate it. He didn't want to confront her about this either and once again, the reasons were vague. It could be that he was being an escapist and didn't want it to be the truth, but then again, who knows? He perhaps didn't want it to be a lie either.

Lies - The way this word was stressed upon when Nagi discovered the misunderstanding is quite noteworthy. Almost like,on their first meeting, when Hayate said that he needs Nagi, was it really only as a hostage? Maybe it was because he was intrigued by Nagi and he needed her to be emotionally available as well. Nagi calling hayate's love for her a lie so many times is a possible hint that it is, in fact, not a lie.

Whom could he die for? A question, the answer of which we all know. Everyone. Whoever needs him, he'll try to save that person. But when the question arises that whom is he WILLING to die for, then without a doubt, that's Nagi. Why? Because he'll have no regrets. Nagi is the one who changed his future, he's now clear of his burdens, both financial and emotional and he got to be with the person who made a 180° change in his destiny. In chapter 566 he said that he has no regrets because after all, he was able to protect her. Maybe he would have had regrets if it was someone other than Nagi, because Nagi is the only person for whom he is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Eagerly awaiting the last chapter. Hoping for the best.

  4. I wish that hayate could have a sudden realization on how he truly needs nagi in his life after all the struggles~ & how i wish it doesnt come to an open ending after all these yrs...I sometimes think that hayate could have been held back for his love to nagi thoughts like he doesnt deserve nagi's affection thinking he's a butler & nagi is on higher grounds than him that he wanted to prove his self first in order to properly take nagi's hand without nagi's help...how i wish it could be like that & seeing nagi's grandpa accept it, having both living without each others help then meet again reconcile & we could see them dating after...the end~:3

  9. Looks like I found something helpful.
In chapter 30, after selling hayate to isumi nagi is kidnapped (willingly). Then gilbert says her not to be afraid of misunderstandings as through overcoming it the bond gets stronger and "only then will love come".
In chapter 32, hayate says even if being too devoted to nagi creates misunderstandings again making her angry, his feeling for her will not change. More importantly, the chapter is named as 'hayate no gotoku';so it possibly contains the main theme of the series.

  11. Now however spoilers are out.

I don't have the time or patience to read everything with my terrible Japanese, but the Nagi ship is finally realized. No epic smooches though, I am sad. Brief spoiler summary below:

Hayate disappears for two years, during that time Nagi works hard running the apartment building and doing side jobs and growing actual curves.

It seems kinda implied that Hina got rejected offscreen, dunno.

Hayate's parents get their shit wrecked by Hsui and Ikusa.

Hayate shows up out of nowhere after two years and gets together with Nagi. They walk off hand in hand.

There appears to be something announced about June but I can't make it out.

    3. It's the most beautiful love story I've ever experienced... where the guy never even kisses the girl he fell in love with eventually... he gets to hold her hand though. :) Nagi was so so beautiful in this finale. Hata really proved all her haters wrong with just this one chapter. None of her outstanding features like her brains and extreme luck were even mentioned. It was just her becoming the strong, independent girl that she promised she would become.

      Delete
    4. Yes, it was a story which also differentiates love and infatuation. Hayate was attracted towards many a girl but chose someone without being provocked by fame and money. Even he was able to go beyond his previous meaning of love.

  16. I was long assured about nagixhayate, it seems so good chapter with all the characters tactfully having their chances to shine.
But Whaaat!! No scene describing about the watch as hayate's birthday present! Neither the empty ringbox that athena gave to nagi. I was really waiting for those to take part in the story. And I wanted to see ayumu more, and maria. If I neglect those points, it is better than any other possible alternatives by giving justice to each character.

    1. I do wish those things were taken into account as well... but this is fine for me too. It shows that whatever attachments they may have had in the past, this is a fresh relationship for the both of them -- and one that they mutually desire now.

  17. I wonder what happened to the shirosakura now that the rg is destroyed. King midas and yozora was defeated so easily without having the actual war, hard to believe for me. What about the words hisui said about being the 'king', 'the chosen one' or having the ability to 'see everything from the beginning'. It's more interesting to see mikado not mourning over after the destruction of rg. He had some intention related to it from the beginning but he was satisfied by having the lotto's key back, which was known to be there not so many chapters ago. Maybe he was relieved as he feared nagi and hayate's death after his daughter's, which would be unbearable for him.
'The place where even the meaning of love can be understood' maybe required a bit more explanation. Not to forget, what about yukariko's wish and why nadza was waiting for nagi to open the path! Nagi's father made no appearence here, neither black camelia, the counterpart of shirosakura.
Lastly, what was hayate's job? Part time jobs are not sufficient to maintain their family. Actually the facts regarding to the rg could easily be ignored unless it took so much concentration in last arcs.

    1. True, there were many questions left unanswered in the end. I'm not going to make up excuses for Hata regarding that. I will say though that as I've always said, these things were just there to facilitate the relationship between Hayate and Nagi -- and they have done their job at that. No mention of what Hayate's job was... well, I think Nagi can manage for the both of them anyway. Based on the spoilers, Hayate wasn't in any money trouble when he met Nagi again.

    1. The more I see other shippers gripe, the more I see the huuuuge elephant in the room they're all studiously ignoring.

Even if you took Nagi out of the ending entirely, the fact remains that Hayate goes into the final arc not having romantic feelings for ANYONE. It may be a first for a shonen romcom, actually.

Hayate is simply so wrapped up in his own guilt, self-loathing and debt to Nagi that he never seriously considers any of the girls over the course of the manga. Athena is the ex-girlfriend, Ayumu and Hina are friendzoned, Maria is so out of his league he doesn't dare think about it, Ruka gets rejected two-thirds through the series, ect.

I actually like the ending more in retrospect because it acknowledges that Hayate needs a few years taking care of himself before he's even ready to start a relationship, and at that point why wouldn't he pick the girl he has the closest bond with out of them all?

There's simply no build-up or support for Hayate picking anyone but Nagi. Which was always true, but it's an even more piercing truth with the entire manga over and done with.

      Delete
    2. So true.

Everyone else always insists that there is no romantic development with Nagi while there are tons developments for the other girls -- which is simply not the case. The problem is that people tend to view the shipteasing moments that Hata laid out throughout the series as actual moments of development, but true development means there was a change, whether explicit or subtle. Despite the many shipteasing moments that Hayate has had with the other girls, it was always Nagi or some event related to Nagi that triggered a change in his behavior or perceptions. This is real development/build-up.

And now that the story has concluded, it's become more painfully obvious that we were right all along.

Hata is a writer who relies on implicit, psychological clues rather than the explicit and visceral storytelling that most people are used to. I believe this is part of the reason why they were so deep in denial of Nagi's ship and now are baffled as to how it came to be. Most people are so used to being told exactly what is happening and thinking that the text is always meant to be 100% accurate, that they feel like they're being "trolled" when it goes otherwise. This is not trolling, this is good storytelling... at least as far as the standards I've learned go.

Hata isn't a perfect writer and there are a lot of things that he could have done better with this piece -- but as far as telling the love story between Hayate and Nagi, he never failed to deliver.

i just got this thought, Hata-sensei sometimes make some chapters that's not important, and i think he might do that so he can improve more at his style art or still process at how he gonna finishing the story line of the manga.

i kinda agree, Hata-sensei made so many hints but there's no conclusion, i hope at when he made some event about the manga there will be explanations, btw when i see the last page of chapter 568 there's no write [END] there.

I'm sorry to say this, but I'm happy that Hata end it like this instead of some sudden realization of Hayate. I always like Hayate x Nagi, but always feels they're not right for each other "yet".
Seeing this last chapter make me feel that now Hayate is in love with Nagi, a strong and independent but still cute and fragile inside which make him can't stop wanting to protect her. Hope that there'll be extra chapter, or anything about them in the future.

Now I'll go read the hints about last chapter again and again until it came out.

We stuck to our guns, we defended our ship with reason, logic, and love for our girl and in the end, our patience and understanding won out... without resorting to offensive attacks on the other girls and their ships. I think that's something we can all be proud of. Agree?

  29. According to translation I've read no one won in the end. It's basically a reunion between Hayate and Nagi. Since the translations I found was like this.

Nagi: I can do everything. Everything... on my own. That's why, Hayate-

Hayate: That's why, you want me to be by your side.

Hayate: My intention of wanting to protect your future, even after two years, hasn't faded away.

    Nagi: Yeah, I see.

Hayate: So then, shall we go now? Below this starry sky that's vaster than anything, there's some things I want to talk to you about.

Nagi: That should be fine. The night is still young. Let's have a nice, long talk.

Hata basically open-ended for us to think what is going to happen.

    1. I can read Japanese and so can a few others here. That translation is fine. As for your interpretation, you're free to think of it that way.

  30. To stop the spread of misinformation, page 30 is mostly an announcement of the dual release of vol. 51-52. There'll be something special along with it -- sez Nagi... maybe. There'll also be some kind of event during the launching.

    Hata's postscript goes:

I thought it would end in 10 weeks, however, the finale took almost six months. I thought we would never get here.

Hoever, before I knew it. 13 years had passed. It exceeded my expectations.

    Thank you to every reader.
    Truly, thank you very much.

Through this work, much has been changed in my life. I am living a life-long retirement on Mykonos island.

Thank you for your support. If am published again in this magazine, I wish to do my best.

Finally, for all the people who read this until the end.

For everyone involved and those I've formed relationships with. To my distant teacher, Mr, Koji Kumeta.

I believe that we will at least meet again someday.

For the last 13 years. Really, thank you very much!

  31. Hey guys! here's my translation for ch. 568. A bit iffy in some parts, but at least it should be mostly accurate. Wait for DKThias' version for pro quality. https://www.mediafire.com/?bbrh4qylqh06v0u

  32. Hata just updated backstage with more confirmations of our ship. My review is ready. I'll just wait until Sunday is actually out before I publish it. I look forward to the post-chapter discussions with you guys. See ya!

  33. I really don't care about the ship, I'm more concern about the characters. That's why not seeing Maria in the final chapter really bother me... I mean, everyone got a panel, even Tama, but Maria, it's like telling us that she's not gonna be a part of their future anymore and it's just sad...
